Tim Burton Marathon: 5 Films for Your October Watchlist

There is something about October that makes ordinary days feel a little more cinematic. Maybe it is the anticipation of Halloween, the fascination with all things eerie, or simply the urge to make the most of a season that always seems to disappear too quickly. If your idea of a perfect evening involves gothic visuals, eccentric characters, dark humour and stories that sit somewhere between strange and strangely comforting, few filmmakers fit the mood quite like Tim Burton. From misunderstood outsiders to resurrected pets, here are five Tim Burton films to add to your October watchlist.

Tim Burton Marathon: 5 Films for Your October Watchlist

1. Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Edward (Johnny Depp) is an unfinished humanoid created by an eccentric inventor who dies before he can give Edward ordinary hands. Left alone in the inventor’s gothic mansion, Edward is eventually discovered by Peg Boggs, a local Avon saleswoman who brings him home to her family. His unusual appearance initially makes him a curiosity in the neighbourhood, but his remarkable talent for sculpting elaborate hedges and haircuts soon makes him a local sensation.

Beneath its whimsical gothic aesthetic, the film explores loneliness, acceptance, and what happens when society decides that someone is too different to belong.

2. Ed Wood (1994)

The movie follows the real-life Edward D. Wood Jr. (Johnny Depp), an aspiring filmmaker whose relentless enthusiasm far exceeds his filmmaking abilities. Determined to make movies despite repeated failures, limited resources and a string of increasingly questionable creative decisions, Wood refuses to abandon his ambitions.

His journey takes an unexpected turn when he forms a friendship with Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau), the ageing actor famous for playing Dracula. Their relationship becomes one of the emotional anchors of the film as Wood tries to give the struggling star another opportunity while simultaneously attempting to build a career of his own.

After dying in an accident, Adam and Barbara Maitland discover that they are still tied to their former home. Their afterlife becomes frustrating when the house is purchased by the Deetz family, who move in and begin renovating it according to their own tastes. The Maitlands attempt to frighten the new residents away, but their efforts prove surprisingly ineffective.

Enter Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), a mischievous and unpredictable spirit who offers to help the ghosts reclaim their home. What initially seems like a convenient solution quickly becomes a much bigger problem, as Betelgeuse has his own agenda and very little regard for boundaries.

Back in his old shop, he resumes his profession while plotting revenge against the judge. His alliance with Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), the eccentric owner of a struggling pie shop, gives his plans an increasingly disturbing turn. October does not necessarily need elaborate Halloween plans. Sometimes, all it takes is something warm to drink and a film that makes the outside world feel a little farther away. And with the strange little universe of ghosts, outsiders and beautifully bizarre stories of Tim Burton, there is plenty to keep the October mood alive!
