According to a press note issued by the hospital, a large sac (which is called a giant occipital meningoencephalocele in medical terminology) behind the head of a female child was removed. According to doctors, it is a rare birth defect and such cases are reported in one out of 10,000 children.

The doctors at King George Hospital, KGH, Vizag, have performed the rare surgery, with a 100% success rate, where the exposed brain tissue was removed and the skull was reconstructed.

The child was born to a couple from G Kotturu village in the ASR district. A doctor at the PHC, where the baby was born, noticed the defect and referred it to the KGH.

The child is recovering. However, the baby should be brought to the hospital to the neurosurgery department for a checkup every month.
