Dasara break ends, GVMC to resume ‘operation lungs’

The GVMC has launched ‘Operation Lungs’ to ensure smooth movement of vehicular traffic and also to keep Vizag city clean, according to a press note issued by its Additional Commissioner D V Ramanamurthy and Chief City Planner A Prabhakar Rao.

The corporation now focuses on widening roads and footpaths and identifying eligible street vendors to accommodate them in vending zones.

The GMVC officials have made it clear that the ‘Operation Lungs’ will continue in Vizag. It has only been suspended on the occasion of Dasara.

Pleading for voluntary removal of encroachments, the two officials have said the corporation has received a number of complaints on encroachments and based on them, the GVMC has initiated the drive.

Of late, Visakhapatnam has been hosting several national and international conferences necessitating measures to make the city more beautiful.

They have warned of strict action against those who continue to encroach roads and footpaths for their business causing inconvenience to the public.

The GVMC will accommodate street vendors in vending zones once they were identified, according to them. The GVMC has already identified many vendors whose shops and push carts have been removed and will provide them with places for doing business in vending zones. The process of setting up vending zones is in the final stage, the two officials have said.
