Vizag steel plant creates history with record single-day hot metal production

On Tuesday, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), also known as Vizag Steel Plant, announced a record-breaking single-day production of hot metal. The official announcement stated that a production of 21,012 metric tonnes of hot metal took place on December 14, exceeding the daily production capacity by 100 per cent, highlighting the plant’s impressive achievement.

​This achievement comes after long-standing protests by workers who have been protesting the privatisation of the Vizag Steel Plant. The statement also mentioned that steel plant operations had seen significant growth and improvement in December 2025, with 92% of production capacity being utilised.

​Secretary of the Union Ministry of Steel, Sandeep Poundrik, congratulated RINL via the social media platform X and expressed both hope and uncertainty about the plant soon reaching its 100% capacity.

Visakhapatnam is the first shore-based steel plant and has the capacity to produce 7.3 million tonnes of liquid steel per annum. They also play a vital role as suppliers of high-value steel products to the defence, shipyard, railway, and other significant construction and infrastructure sectors.
