Collector Pravin Kumar called a meeting with all departments to make a collective effort to minimise road accidents in the city. He directed officials present at the meeting to be tough on traffic violators who over-speed, over-load, drive under influence and without licenses. He urged them to book cases against any such person caught.
The Collector has asked the District Road Safety Committee to meet on every third Tuesday, as per the directions of the state government. All departments associated with road safety will come out with plans to improve safety in the city and collect funds required for the implementation of the same. All this will be done by the next meeting, reportedly said the Collector.
All the traffic safety works in the city will be completed by the end of July. GVMC officials have sent in proposal for central lighting works in the city. Lighting works for 16 KMs at a cost of Rs 5 crore will be taken up under the 14th Finance Commission funds if the proposal is approved.
The Collector directed officials to clear bushes and encroachments on National Highway and put up sign boards in their stead. District Panchayat Officer Krishna Kumari has been directed to ensure lights are functioning in all panchayats along the National Highway in the district. Roads and Buildings officials will construct speed breakers at the Beach Road and anywhere else necessary.
GVMC and Police officials have been directed to make a joint survey for the setup of a multi-level parking at the Beach Road. Police, transport and any officials connected to implementation of road safety have been called upon to make field inspections of the work that will be executed. A report has been asked to be submitted in the next meeting.
A special month-long drive by the Transport Department saw 3196 cases booked and 346 driving licenses suspended. The special drive will reportedly now be continued to improve on road safety. The government has issued orders that if more than three deaths occur in a single accident, the Road Safety Committee will analyse the reasons and implement remedial measures.
