The Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh R.P. Thakur inaugurated the newly built model police station at MVP Colony in Visakhapatnam yesterday. City Police Commissioner Mahesh Chandra Laddha, District Collector K. Bhaskar, VMRDA Vice Chairman Basant Kumar, and a few other officials, were also present at the opening.
The 6,000 sq. ft. building is the second of its type, in the city, after the one at PM Palem. With a plush reception area and a seating capacity of twenty five, the facilities are in line with many model police stations coming up across Andhra Pradesh. Built at an estimated budget of Rs.1.6 crores, the station is equipped with state-of-the-art workstations. Additionally, there are separate rooms for the crime wing, writers and the Station House Officer (SHO). The custody room, along with a lockup, is located on the second floor.
After inaugurating the model police station in Visakhapatnam, DGP Thakur, while speaking to the press, mentioned that they would do everything to ensure that peace and safety continue to be associated with Vizag. When asked about the recent Rushikonda rave party bust case, he mentioned that they had initially arrested five people for drug peddling. These culprits were caught with drugs such as LSD, cocaine, and MMDA. The drugs were sourced from Goa and through the Dark Web. Further investigations, in the case, have revealed names of almost 9 to 10 more people and that the police are gearing up to arrest them.
DGP Thakur also informed that special teams are always working to address the drug menace in the city. They will be keeping a close eye on hostels and educational institutions for drug users. Furthermore, he also mentioned that the drug business in Vizag is being run by a big mafia and work is in progress to track down and arrest them.
Lastly, DGP Thakur also requested the public to notify the police in case they notice any drug user or smuggler. A special helpline number, 7569309090, has been created for this purpose.
