The first convocation ceremony of Indian Institute of Petroleum & Energy(IIPE), Visakhapatnam is scheduled to be held on 21 January, 2022. IIPE was established by the Government of India, under the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, in 2016 at Visakhapatnam. This was done in accordance with the provisions made in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014. Initially, the institute was registered under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2001 and subsequently, the IIPE Visakhapatnam Bill 2017 was enacted by the Parliament. The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy Act, 2017 (No. 3 of 2018) declares IIPE to be an “Institute of National Importance”.
IIPE Visakhapatnam is co-promoted as an energy domain specific institute by leading Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) namely Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Oil India Limited (OIL), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) in association with the Oil Industry Development Board (OIDB). The main objectives of establishing IIPE are to fill the quantitative and qualitative gap of skilled manpower, for petroleum & energy sectors, as well as to boost the research activities needed for the growth of these sectors. Also, considering the rapid innovations and developments of new technology in the energy sector, and other emerging areas like Shale gas, Coal Bed Methane, Gas Hydrates, Renewal Energy & Gas etc., the IIPE is expected to keep pace with the new developments and enough scope to excel.
Courses offered :
The Institute is mandated to nurture and promote quality and excellence in education and research in the area of petroleum and hydrocarbons and energy. Also, to provide for programmes and courses of instruction and research leading to the award of the Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees in engineering and technology, management, sciences and arts. IIPE is presently offering 4 year B.Tech programs in Petroleum Engineering & Chemical Engineering apart from Ph.D research courses. The PG programs in Energy & Geology will start from the next academic year. IIPE has collaborated with leading International Universities such as Texas A&M University, University of Houston, USA and other nationally important institutions specialized in the energy domain. IIPE has also collaborated with IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, & IIT Hyderabad for student & faculty exchange programs. IIT Kharagpur is the mentor institute for IIPE.
Permanent Campus:
IIPE Visakhapatnam has been allotted the land by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, free of cost, at Vangali Village, Sabbavaram Mandal, Visakhapatnam for construction of its permanent campus. The construction of the campus is beyond its planned schedule due to delay in handing over of land and some hurdles caused by the local farmers’ community pertaining to their compensation from the Andhra Pradesh State Government. The Institute has taken up its compound wall construction with a total cost of Rs. 11 crores, which is expected to complete by May 2022. The permanent campus, with a total budgetary cost of Rs.650 crore is expected to come up in another two years of time in the alienated land. After its completion, the institute will be known for its World-Class infrastructure with the best faculty.
Placements:
At present the institute has taken up its responsibility to extend placements in various oil PSUs and other noted companies. In the current batch the institute has placed 70% of students in the selected companies, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation.
IIPE Convocation ceremony, Visakhapatnam
The first convocation of IIPE is scheduled to be held on 21 January, 2022 from 10:30 am at Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) Children’s Arena, Visakhapatnam. The Honorable Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu, is the chief guest for the convocation. The Honorable Minister of State of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of State in Labour and Employment, Rameshwar Teli, will be the Guest of Honour for this event.
A total of 170 students, from the batches of 2016-2020 and 2017-2021, are being awarded with the degrees. Three students from each batch are receiving gold medals and merit certificates for their academic excellence. The institute has extended the invitation to all directors & vice-chancellors of universities in and around Visakhapatnam. The CMDs of oil PSUs, & other prominent personalities from Oil & Gas Sector, are expected to attend the event. The event is going to be conducted by duly following all COVID-19 protocols and in accordance with orders of the government.
In view of the present pandemic situation, the facility to join the IIPE convocation program, virtually, is also being extended to the students & guests. The program will also be telecasted live through IIPE Youtube channel.
