
Visakhapatnam is set to get a big boost in tourism as Wonderla, one of the most popular theme park chains, will establish its amusement park on 50 acres in the region.
According to Ajay Jain, Principal Secretary (Tourism), who presented a comprehensive overview of the tourism sector’s achievements and future plans at the Collectors’ Conference held in Amaravati on 17 December, the State was successful in attracting major theme park operators. While Wonderla will establish its park in Visakhapatnam, Imagicaa World will invest in Tirupati.
When the Principal Secretary raised a concern regarding land allotment for tourism projects, Chief Minister N. Chandrashekar Naidu made it clear that tourism should be given priority in land allotment, followed by IT.
Presenting statistics with regard to the recently concluded Vizag Summit, Ajay Jain said the Tourism Department signed 209 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹28,977 crore across the State. Visakhapatnam led the tally with 66 proposals worth ₹11,092 crore, followed by Tirupati with 27 proposals worth ₹5,321 crore, and Guntur (including Amaravati) with 17 proposals worth ₹3,960 crore.
The Principal Secretary said that 27 projects were already grounded, representing a total investment of ₹5,820 crore. “These projects are set to add 4,597 hotel rooms across the State and generate employment for 10,645 people directly and 18,030 candidates indirectly. Visakhapatnam leads in grounded projects with nine hotels adding 1,880 rooms with an investment of ₹2,916.47 crore, followed by Tirupati with six projects adding 1,003 rooms worth ₹1,123 crore.”
