Wine Shop Fined By GVMC

A fine of Rs. 10,000 was recently imposed by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on a wine shop at Pedda Waltair on Sunday. They had littered the adjacent drainage channel, resulting in the blockage of sewage water. GVMC sources reportedly stated that the complaints from local sanitation inspectors and sanitation workers of the corporation had paved a way for the GVMC officials to take up such an action.

GVMC Zonal Commissioner P Nallanayya also visited the shop on Sunday morning and inspected the surroundings of the shop. The Commissioner noticed the dirty drainage and immediately closed down the shop. The fine amount was also collected from the shop management.

The Zonal Commissioner reportedly said that it this action that should be a lesson for other commercial establishments and wine shops in the city. Dumping of waste into drainage canals blocks the free flow of sewage water, especially during the rainy season. Later on he also added that all the commercial outlets of our city should maintain separate dustbins for dumping waste onto their premises.

Every day we come across huge piles of garbage, plastic cups, carry bags and bottles, overflowing from the drains and flooding onto roads. This has become a common practise for many people. In recent past, garbage clogging the drain was dumped on roads for drying, thereby blocking the service road. In a time when the GVMC has taken progressive measures like the waste segregation initiative that talks about the usage of two bins to differentiate waste materials, many are not interested in using a bin in the first place.
