Vizag Railway Station will be developed with a new layout and design, featuring 14 platforms and 16 railway lines. The revised plans, already sent to the Railway Board, are with future expansion in mind. The original proposal included a ground-plus-two structure; the foundations will support up to ground-plus-eleven floors to accommodate long-term requirements.
A total of Rs 20 crore has been spent on demolishing old structures, and the site is ready for construction. The new station buildings will now have resting and overnight stay facilities for passengers. Entry and exit points will be designed on the lines of modern airports to ensure smooth movement even during peak hours or VIP visits. Vizag MP M Sribharat recently met with the Railway Minister to seek approval for the new designs, which are expected to be finalised by January. The works are said to be completed within two years.
According to the new plan, the western-side station building will be removed to make way for new platforms. A large, modern station building will then be developed on the Gnanapuram (eastern) side.
A parking facility with capacity for 350 cars and 1,500 two-wheelers will be built, while drainage systems will be diverted.
The eastern and western station buildings will be connected through an air bridge. Existing Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), currently 3-3.5 meters wide, will be expanded to at least 12 meters. The Union Railway Minister has welcomed the proposal to design structural foundations for vertical expansion, with the first phase limited to three floors.
Vizag MP M Sribharat inspected the ongoing works and urged the authorities to retain Visakhapatnam as a terminal station, while also requesting the introduction of Vande Bharat trains to Tirupati and Bengaluru. The construction of a third line between Duvvada and Visakhapatnam is underway and expected to be completed by December 2026.
