Special teams, from Visakhapatnam police, raided several college hostels for drug peddlers on Monday evening. This comes post the arrest of five people, at a rave party at Rushikonda, in April. As instructed by the Director General of Police (DGP), RP Thakur, the educational institutions were advised to be kept on the vigil.
Reportedly, these raids were conducted after the police received information about students, at hostels, allegedly being in possession of drugs. Sources revealed that the police have not been able to recover any contraband from the campuses, but they are on constant surveillance for illegal drugs.
Notably, cases of students smoking weed are not new. One such incident came to light earlier last year when students of a reputed college were caught for being in possession of ganja. The DGP noted the lack of surveillance in hostels, by the management, for the rise in illegal activities.
Throwing light on the operation on the cases involving drug peddlers in Visakhapatnam, a senior police officer said that they are will be keeping an eye on people who have already had a history of drug supplying and peddling.
