Sowcar Janaki: 5 Classic Films That Defined Her Legacy

A lot of people may know Sowcar Janaki from Yevade Subramanyam, Kanche, or Anni Manchi Sakunamule, which was her final on-screen appearance in 2023. But her career spanned more than seven decades, during which she acted in over 400 films across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema. As she breathed her last on August 21, 2026, at the age of 94, following age-related health complications, here’s to remembering the veteran actress through some of the performances that showcased her range as an artist. If you want to revisit these classics, the films below are available to watch on YouTube.

1. Shavukaru (1950)

For both Janaki and N. T. Rama Rao, Shavukaru marked an important beginning. It was Janaki’s film debut and NTR’s first leading role. Janaki was 18 at the time. Her performance as the playful and expressive Subbulu brought her widespread recognition, with the film’s title becoming a part of her screen name as Sowcar Janaki.

Directed by L. V. Prasad and featuring music composed by Ghantasala, the film revolves around two neighbouring families whose quarrels escalate before they eventually reconcile.

2. Rojulu Marayi (1955)

As the title suggests, Rojulu Marayi tells the story of changing social conditions and the hardships faced by peasants under zamindari rule. Janaki plays Radha, a woman who is ostracised by her village because of her father’s social standing.

Directed by Tapi Chanakya, Janaki’s role shows a different side of her on-screen persona, as she stars alongside Akkineni Nageswara Rao.

3. Kanyasulkam (1955)

Another film rooted in social commentary, Kanyasulkam sees Janaki play Buchamma, a young widow who was married as a child. Set in the pre-Independence era, the film explores the conditions faced by women and the stigma surrounding child widows. Sharing the screen with N. T. Rama Rao, Savitri and C.S.R. Anjaneyulu, the film examines casteism, child marriage and other social practices through Gurajada Apparao’s play of the same name.

4. Doctor Chakravarthy (1964)

Unlike some of her earlier roles, Sowcar Janaki plays Nirmala, a woman more drawn to worldly comforts than to understanding her husband’s work and emotional struggles. This creates distance in her marriage to Dr Chakravarthy, played by Akkineni Nageswara Rao, pushing him to find emotional solace in his relationship with Madhavi, played by Savitri, who reminds him of his sister. Janaki’s portrayal of Nirmala stands out for the way the character’s priorities fuel the tension in the marriage.

5. Samsaram Oka Chadarangam (1987)

The film centres on a joint family whose relationships are tested following a disagreement between the father and his eldest son. Janaki plays Chilakamma in this Telugu remake of the Tamil film Samsaram Adhu Minsaram. A long-time maid in the household, Chilakamma is among the central characters in the storyline. Her outspoken nature and dialogue delivery, including the use of the Srikakulam dialect, add to the character.

The role reflects another facet of Janaki’s acting and earned her the Nandi Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Sowcar Janaki’s filmography shows how an actor can reinvent themselves across generations. Her performances covered roles as varied as the decades she worked in. While her later films introduced her to a new generation of audiences, these classics reveal the depth and versatility that made her one of Telugu cinema’s most memorable performers.
