As a part of Swachh Bharat initiative, 73 metropolitan cities exceeding a population of 10 lakhs were reviewed and rated for their cleanliness. Surveyors visited 42 locations, including railway stations and public toilets, in each city.
Visakhapatnam moved from the 44th position in the 2014-15 survey to 5th this year, in addition to it being one of the introductory 20 smart cities lined up for development. The GVMC Commissioner, Visakhapatnam – Pravin Kumar was awarded and credited for the drastic change in city maintenance and hygiene compared to the previous year. Open defecation, solid waste management, information, education and behavioural change were some of the key areas where change was observed.
With such encouragement, hopefully our clean and green city will continue to be maintained and improve its ranking in the coming year too.
