The staff of the drug control office in Visakhapatnam seized around 5,900 bottles of Rivicold cold or cough syrup, which has been prohibited for use in children below 4 years, from a wholesale medical agency at Marripalem in the city on 13 October. The seized bottles are worth Rs. 4.5 lakh.
The cough syrup seized by Marripalem police contains chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine hydrochloride, and is manufactured in Uttarakhand, according to a press note.
The label failed to carry the mandatory warning — ‘Not to be used in children below 4 years of age.’
A case has been registered against the manufacturer under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. The seized material will be produced in court.
In view of the recent incidents of child deaths in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan due to contaminated cough syrups, Drug Inspector Srimivasa Rao has warned that stringent legal action will be taken against those selling the prohibited drugs.
