Spotify working to launch its service in India says CEO Daniel Ek

Music streaming giant Spotify is working to launch its service in India, co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek said during the company’s investor day presentation.

“We are working on launching in some of the biggest markets in the world, including India, Russia, and Africa which has a very rich musical culture,” Daniel said at the presentation, without revealing any specific details of the timeline for the launch.

However, the company’s public offering filing disclosed that it leased an office space in Mumbai last year. It was also learned that at the end of 2017, Spotify had an aggregate of 308 employees in countries including India, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, Spain, Singapore, and Turkey among others.

Earlier, it was reported that the music streaming firm had hired former Google executive Akshat Harbola as the head of its operations in India.

Spotify’s chief marketing officer Seth Farbman, at the presentation, said that the company was already well-organized in markets like India where it is yet to launch.

Launched in 2008, Sweden-based Spotify is the world’s largest streaming service with 71 million paid subscribers, with a major foothold in places spread over Europe, Australia, North America, South America, and parts of Asia.

Last month, the company filed for direct listing on New York Stock Exchange and said it will go on trading from April 3rd.
