SHE takes patriotic route to enter record book

Aiming at the world record, the founder of Mahila Vikas, Suribhatla Madhavi, has taken up the task of crafting 50,000 handmade crocheted national flags to mark the 80th Independence Day on August 26 in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.

As a part of the campaign’s announcement, Madhavi, accompanied by Mahila Manovikas member Challa Manjula, called on District Collector M N Harendhira Prasad on 21 October and presented a meticulously crocheted tricolour. The handcrafted flag is a testament to the dedication and skill of the artisans who created it.

According to Madhavi, over 250 women are currently engaged in crocheting the flags. Terming it a tribute to the nation, she said the flags would be distributed to schools, colleges, government offices, and the public in the lead-up to the grand celebrations of Independence Day in 2026.

What makes this initiative even more special is its scale and intent — a world record attempt. Aiming at creating history with the largest number of handmade national flags, the project is being submitted to the Guinness World Records. Madhavi has already earned global recognition eight times for her work in similar fields.

Appreciating the endeavour, Harendhira Prasad described the project as a commendable effort that aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of women’s empowerment. He acknowledged the initiative’s dual impact — igniting patriotic fervour while fostering self-reliance and innovation among women.

This pioneering campaign by Mahila Manovikas is more than just a record-setting attempt. It symbolises the power of collective action, women’s leadership, and grassroots creativity — showcasing how national pride can be woven, quite literally, by the hands of India’s women.
