GVMC to execute newer plans from today as a step towards achieving cleaner Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, as we all know, is one among the cleanest cities in India. The city, which possesses some pristine beaches and spotless roads in some areas, doesn’t fail to amaze anyone who visits it for the first time. However, maintaining the city’s cleanliness is an ongoing process and requires continual efforts from the authorities and the public. As a step towards achieving the same, Visakhapatnam’s civic body, GVMC, is all set to execute newer plans for waste disposal in the city.

Below are some of the steps that will be put into effect from today.

  • All the apartments, gated communities, and industries (that generate waste on a large scale) will have to segregate the waste into two categories- dry waste and wet waste. These wastes must be disposed of in two separate dustbins which are catered to the respective categories. Those who fail to follow the same will be charged with a fine ranging from Rs. 100 to Rs. 500. Also, gated communities and large-scale organisations must mandatorily make arrangements to prepare compost.
  • GVMC has employed 2.000 individuals for the job of collecting garbage from households. The workers will visit each house in certain areas of the city in order to collect garbage. Also, GVMC officials will visit each household and introduce the worker to the house owners and instruct them to hand over the garbage only to the concerned worker. The house owners will have to pay an amount of Rs. 50 to the worker on a monthly basis.
  • Shopkeepers who use plastic bags which are thinner than 50 microns in size, or any other covers, will be imposed a fine ranging from Rs. 2500 to Rs. 5000.
  • Anyone openly defecating anywhere in the city will be charged with a fine of Rs.300.

Many in the city hope that these new rules will be put into force with full effect and ultimately serve for the good of Visakhapatnam.
