Montha to cross coast tonight, very heavy rain likely

Throwing normal life out of gear, rain in Visakhapatnam, under the influence of Cyclone Montha, has uprooted trees and caused landslides in several parts of the city. Landslips were reported from Yendada and Sithakonda (Bhimili constituency). Water was seen overflowing on roads.

Roads wore a deserted look at many places, and roadside shops remained closed.

Meanwhile, according to the weather office, the Montha cyclone lies 340 km off the coast of Visakhapatnam. The cyclonic storm is expected to approach the coast by the night of 28 October or in the early hours of 29 October. Under its influence, very heavy rainfall is likely in the next 48 hours.

Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu is continuously monitoring the situation and has directed officials to remain on high alert, ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to minimise the loss.

Taking stock of the situation, Home Minister V Anitha spoke to the Collectors of the coastal Andhra and sought timely reports.

In Visakhapatnam, MLAs are visiting the areas in their constituencies to alert the people and to evacuate them from the low-lying areas.
