AU students end stir

The students of Andhra University ended their agitation against the death of a student following assurance by the university Vice-chancellor on 26 September.

District Collector announced setting up of a three-member committee to probe into the incident. The panel will submit a report in a week.

Action would be taken based on the report, said the Vice-Chancellor.

Earlier, tension continued to prevail on the campus of Andhra University in Visakhapatnam on the second day as students staged a protest on 26 September also.

Students of Andhra University have been agitating following the death of a student, Manikantha, on 25 September.

The student collapsed in the hostel room, and other students called for a university ambulance. Though the vehicle reached the spot, it was not well equipped, and the student died before being taken to KGH.

Alleging poor medical facilities on the university campus, the students launched a protest. They demand better medical facilities on the campus and justice for the family members of the deceased student.

Meanwhile, HRD and IT Minister Nara Lokesh expressed grief over the Andhra University student’s death. Speaking in the Assembly, Lokesh, while terming the incident unfortunate, took a serious view of the agitation by students. Admitting lapse on the part of the authorities, he said: “We rectify it. But the disruption of classes by a section of students is not fair.” He warned of action if the agitation was not withdrawn.
