Located in the 27th ward of the GVMC, Nehru Bazaar, which was once very much popular in Visakhapatnam, now cries for attention and many of its shops are in a bad shape. When GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg along with MLA Vamsikrishna Srinivas, ward corporator Golagani Veera Rao and others visited the bazaar on 31 July, several vendors poured their grievances seeking repairs to their shops. Responding positively, Ketan Garg directed officials to prepare a detailed plan for renovation of the bazaar.
During the inspection, MLA Vamsikrishna Srinivas stated that Nehru Bazaar, being centrally located in the city, caters to the shopping needs of a large number of people. He pointed out that many of the shops in the market were in a dilapidated condition. He suggested restoration works with modern amenities, ensuring that vendors selling fish, meat, vegetables, and other goods would face no inconvenience.
Golagani Veera Rao requested the Commissioner to allot more sanitation workers for the ward citing their shortage. He also appealed for provision of adequate stationery, computers, and printers for ward secretaries to discharge their duties effectively.
During the visit, the Commissioner, the MLA and the corporator, interacted with the vendors.
They told the Commissioner that more than 200 vendors have been doing business for several years and were currently facing difficulties due to lack of basic facilities. Though they have been paying monthly rentals and user charges, no basic amenities were provided, they complained.
The Commissioner instructed Superintending Engineer Satyanarayana Raju to prepare a plan for development of the bazaar. The Commissioner also instructed the ward sanitation secretary to closely monitor daily sanitation activities.
After visiting Nehru Bazaar in Visakhapatnam the Commissioner visited the nearby Diamond Park and inspected the fitness equipment installed in it. He made several suggestions for improvement of facilities at the park.
