On September 17, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) will launch the second Make in India ship in the Visakhapatnam class of destroyers. The ship is being launched ahead of schedule is christened ‘Mormugao’, after the Mormugao port in Goa. Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lamba will be the chief guest of the function where the 7300 tonne guided missile destroyer that was constructed on dry area will touch water for the first time. The first such vessel was launched in April 2015.
MDL is constructing four more destroyers for Kolkata class, named ‘Paradip’ and another after a coastal city in Gujarat. MDL has been delivering one major warship per year to the Indian Navy since 2010. Six Scorpene class submarines, one of which is named ‘Kalavari’ are also being constructed for the Indian Navy under a technology transfer from DCNS from France.
The designing of futuristic stealth frigates is in progress, with work commencing in 2017. MDL will leverage new infrastructure in the yard to develop an integrated construction methodology. This will shift the paradigm in the way ships are built in India in the future.
