Over 20 passengers were charred to death and 12 persons were injured in a major road accident when a private travel bus caught fire on the outskirts of Kurnool in the early hours of 24 October.
According to reports, the accident occurred in Kurnool when a private travel bus caught fire after it hit a motorbike and was dragged a distance. Fire broke out from the fuel tank of the bike, and it engulfed the bus. Twelve passengers, who were asleep, woke up and jumped through the emergency exit, while others were burnt alive. Both drivers fled the scene after the incident.
According to preliminary reports, 39 persons were in the vehicle when the accident occurred. The number of persons who died may be more.
The ill-fated bus was on its way to Bengaluru from Hyderabad. The injured passengers were admitted to a hospital in Kurnool.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who was in Dubai, expressed shock over the tragedy and directed the officials concerned to rush to the spot for rescue and relief operations.
