The GVMC will initiate measures to prevent the flow of sewage from entering the sea, according to Corporation Commissioner Ketan Garg.
As a part of the exercise, the Commissioner, along with officials and Andhra University professors, visited the canals that converge at the beach on 26 October to find a permanent solution to the issue.
During the visit, the team inspected the canal under the bridge at the Jagannatha Swamy Temple near All India Radio, and the canal area near the YMCA on the beach road, and discussed the measures to be taken to prevent sewage from entering the beach. A constructed wetland, if taken up at the canal near YMCA beach, could solve the problem to some extent, the team opined.
The professors suggested to the Commissioner that similar structures should be built at the remaining canals that converge at the beach. The Commissioner directed the executive engineer to have a long discussion with the professors and prepare proposals for it.
The Commissioner later inspected the process of sewage flowing at the YMCA canal and directed the assistant engineers concerned to inspect the canals regularly and take appropriate measures to ensure that there were no obstructions.
The Commissioner, who noticed an accumulation of a large amount of waste in front of a shop located in the YMCA parking lot on the beach, imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on the shopkeeper for not maintaining cleanliness.
