Vizag Kidney Racket: District Collector and Police Commissioner probe the case

The kidney racket in Vizag, which came to limelight last week, has been taking several ugly turns by the day. Taking place at the city’s Sraddha Hospital, the case revealed a dark tale of kidney transplant in Vizag. Reportedly, the donor, who was assured of Rs. 12 lacs in return for his kidney, was paid just Rs 5 lacs, making him register a complaint with the police. Following this, the authorities have been instructed to take the hospitals to task if found trading the organs illegally. The culprits responsible have been taken into custody accordingly.

Both the District Collector and the Commissioner, are probing the details and ensuring that the right measures are taken to stop such incidents further on. A three-member committee has been formed and in two days will divulge more information said the District Collector, K Bhaskar.

While addressing the media, the Collector said, “Many hospitals don’t even maintain a register and we have already identified such places and people. The doctors and the hospitals will have to face the consequences if found guilty. We have asked them to check the records of the transplants done in the hospitals. The moment they give me the report, this inquiry will expand to all hospitals which have done any kind of transplant. There is another angle to it if the hospital chooses not to record the kidney transplant and it has not come to the committee’s notice. Then this is also subject to inquiry.”

The Police Commissioner Mahesh Chandra Laddha, while speaking to the media over the Vizag kidney racket, said “It’s the basic responsibility of a hospital not to allow any unlawful activities. We are not concerned about the price aspect and are looking into is the procedural aspect. In some hospitals, they have clearly violated and the reports are awaited in a day or two to take action. If some complainant comes forward, we are willing to get into those details.”
