VISARANAI – India’s official pick for Oscars 2017

The national award winning Tamil docu-drama thriller, Visaranai has been picked for Oscars 2017 under Foreign Film category. It emerged successful in the race consisting of 29 other films, which included the likes of Neerja, Udta Punjab, Sairat, Bajirao Mastani, Sultan, Thithi, Fan, and Airlift. Helmed by Vetrimaran and produced by actor Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films, it is based on a true story adapted from the novel ‘Lock Up’, penned by autodriver-turned-writer M.Chandrakumar, popularly known as ‘Auto Chandran’.

The film documents the lives of four migrant workers who face police brutality under false charges of corruption. The custodial violence and unspeakable sufferings of the four men was captured in the best way; true to real life happenings. Visaranai premiered at Venice International Film Festival in 2015, making it the first Tamil film to premier in 72 years of the film festival history. It had a theatrical release in 2016. With three prestigious National Awards in its kitty, the film also won the Amnesty International Italia Award 2015. Dhanush, overjoyed with the news thanked the cast of the film – Dinesh, Samuthrakani, Ajay Ghosh and Kishore for their spell-bounding performance.

The 89th Academy Awards are supposed to be held on Febuary 27, 2017 in Los Angeles. We wish the film makes its way through the nomination and makes India stand tall. Fingers crossed!
