It’s a dream come true for them. Their efforts since 1978 bear fruit at last. The women in blue have emerged world champions.
Amid thunderous cheers from the crowd at the Mumbai stadium, the Indian team came out in flying colours, winning the ICC Women’s World Cup on November 2 for the first time.
Batting first after losing the toss, the Harmanpreet Kaur team scored 298 runs, setting a target of 299 for the South African women.
With her brilliant performance, Shafali Verma scored 87 runs and took two wickets, contributing to the easy win for the team.
Chasing the target, the South Africa team fell short of it and were all out for 247 runs.
Congratulating the team, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the performance shown by the women would be an inspiration to future champions.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who was in London, was all praise for the team. The woman has made the country proud, he said.
