AP signs MoU with Google for data centre in Vizag

In a step forward towards transforming Visakhapatnam into an IT hub, the Andhra Pradesh government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IT giant Google for the establishment of Asia’s largest data centre in the city.

The pact was inked in the presence of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Ashwini Vaishnav, and K Rammohan Naidu, State IT Minister Nara Lokesh, and a host of dignitaries.

As a part of the deal, Google will set up a 1GW AI data centre in Visakhapatnam with an investment of Rs. 88,628 crore.

Speaking on the occasion, Chandrababu Naidu said when he mooted the idea, Google responded positively and the State IT Minister worked hard and speeded up the process and made it possible. “In tune with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of Vikasit Bharat, the State government is making all-out efforts to achieve it and we hope the dream will be fulfilled well ahead of the stipulated deadline of 2047.”

“My ambition is that every family in Andhra Pradesh should use AI in course of time,” said the Chief Minister.

Nirmala Sitharaman, Ashwini Vaishnav, and Lokesh also spoke.

According to Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, the facility will make Visakhapatnam a global connectivity hub as the centre will have connectivity with 12 countries. It is the first time that Google makes a huge investment outside the USA.
