To boost tourism and the brand image of Vizag, Andhra Pradesh Tourism and Sports Minister, Muttamseti Srinivasa Rao, announced that the City of Destiny will host the first round of the Indian National Rally Championship in December, 2021. This championship rally is part of the four-round nationals of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs in India (FMCI).
This is the first time Andhra Pradesh is hosting a motorsport rally of such magnitude and grand affair. This event was postponed several times because of the pandemic and is now scheduled to be organised from 16 to 18 December, 2021. This motorsport rally is being organised by the Karnataka Motorsport Club.
While the first round will take place in Vizag, due to paucity of time and delays, the remaining three rounds will be conducted in Bengaluru and Coimbatore. The venue for the final round is yet to be decided. Apart from the championship rounds, a contender round will be hosted at Hyderabad in April, 2022.
Several prominent and key teams will be participating in the first round of the Indian National Rally Championship in Vizag. MRF, JK Tyres, Mahindra & Mahindra, Yokohama Motorsports, Chettinad Sporting, Snap Racing, amongst others, will be taking part.
Reportedly, the promoter of the Champions Yacht Club, Merala Vamsi, said that the aesthetic beach view of Vizag, and the long coastal drive, will provide the perfect setting for the four-day rally. He also added that the king of Indian motorsports, and the only Arjuna awardee in this sport, Gaurav Gill will be participating in the Indian National Rally Championship.
