Aviation
50 young girls from Kendriya Vidyalaya and Ramanath Secondary School in Visakhapatnam got a chance to see the operations at the Visakhapatnam airport and how a day in the life at work in the aviation sector goes by. A popular career choice of many of the young students of Visakhapatnam, the aviation sector prospects were elaborated by global aerospace company Lockheed Martin. They teamed up with Women in Aviation India Chapter (WAIC) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) to bring forward the aviation and aerospace sectors as possible future avenues.
Lockheed Martin chief executive Phil Shaw said there were no boundaries to innovation and girls could explore careers in aviation and aerospace. To this end the Visakhapatnam students met representatives from the aviation industry to gain clarity on career prospects in engineering and aviation. Lockheed Martin has partnered with many organisations like Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Tata Trusts to mentor start-ups earlier. They further partner by providing seed fund through the India Innovation Growth Programme.
The WAIC comprises a group of women professionals from various sectors of aviation to expand the professional curve of girls into the unexplored occupations in aviation and aerospace sectors. It seeks to highlight the fact that there is a lot more to the aviation sector than is known by people through popular media. Lockeheed Martin are always about finding ways to encourage girls and boys to take an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The day for exposure of students is specifically geared to making sure girls feel confident in pursuing STEM careers.
