On the occasion of the 94th death anniversary of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju on Monday, CPM State secretariat member Ch Narsinga Rao and other left party leaders demanded that Visakhapatnam should be named after Alluri. They also said that drawing inspiration from the great man, Special Category Status, and Visakhapatnam railway zone should also be announced by the centre.
After paying tributes at Alluri Sitarama Raju’s statue at Seethammadhara in the city, Rao reminded of the freedom fighter’s sacrifices for the country. He said Sitarama Raju had headed many rebellions to save India from the British rule, and added it is unfortunate that the government has not catered due importance to such a great hero.
Reportedly, Dr. Zaheer Ahmed, who is running a non-profit organisation, said that despite having permission for installing Alluri Seetharama Raju statue in the Parliament and Legislative Assembly, the leaders have failed in doing the same. Ahmed demanded the state government to establish statue in the premises of Legislative Assembly before July 4th, the birth anniversary of Alluri.
