Directorate-General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI) is being renamed as Directorate- General Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGSTI) under the goods and service tax regime. It will be put into action from the 1st of April, 2017 to detect and deter indirect tax evasion.
The upcoming DGGSTI will have an entire new zone in Patna along with upgrading five units in Jaipur, Ludhiana, Vizag , Kochi and Bhubaneswar. They are also planning to set up eight more regional and sub-regional units to increase the footprints of the intelligence body. Thereby increasing the need for new recruits as there will be a unit set up in every state to carry out the intelligence works.
The system is also looking forward to update the working and amending the complicated system of various levies which include octroi, excise duty, service tax, value-added tax, entertainment tax, luxury tax by replacing it with one single tax. Suggestion to abolish the large taxpayer units has been given by the current workers.
There might be implications and high scrutiny on large taxpayers which will be followed in once the new regime is put in action which is in less than six months.
