Shankar Dada MBBS: Why This Classic Still Has a Place in Our Hearts

There are some films that make you laugh every time you watch them, even when you already know what’s coming next. Shankar Dada MBBS is one such film. As it returns to the big screen on 22 August, on the occasion of Chiranjeevi’s 71st birthday, fans get the chance to revisit one of his most entertaining roles from the 2000s. Years later, the film hasn’t lost its grip on audiences. Read on to see why.

Meet Shankar Dada

Shankar Prasad, better known as Shankar Dada, is a local goon with a reputation for settling problems in his own unconventional way. However contradictory it may seem, this goon has principles. His loyalty stands out, be it towards his family, friends, or even casual acquaintances, and his respect for people and down-to-earth nature make him quite a character.

But his biggest vice is that he lies to his parents about his profession, posing as a doctor and setting up a fake charitable hospital just to appease their wish. However, once the facade wears out, he makes it a point to actually finish medical college and obtain the degree, a decision that also brings him face to face with Dr. Sunitha, played by Sonali Bendre, whose father exposed his lie in the first place. What follows can only be described as over two hours of hilarious scenarios unfolding in true Chiru fashion.

Comedy that never gets old

If you want to talk about Shankar Dada MBBS with someone who watched it in the 2000s, chances are they will remember a dialogue, a character, or a comedy scene before the plot. The film lets a lot of cast members shine effortlessly, leaving us with memorable characters. A few honorary mentions include Srikanth, Paresh Rawal, MS Narayana and Venu Madhav. The interactions, mainly the central conflict, between Shankar Dada and Dr Ramalingeswara Rao also provide much-needed comedic relief.

The premise alone is a riot: someone with no conventional academic background, who doesn’t understand medical terminology, has the conviction to obtain a medical degree. And his concern is not to actually learn the syllabus, but to “walk in style” through the campus.

Whether it is Chiranjeevi’s dialogue delivery, his literal translation of Telugu proverbs into broken English, or the perfectly timed background score, the movie is a joy ride.

When the music matched the madness

Composed by Devi Sri Prasad, the soundtrack became an integral part of the film’s appeal, with tracks like Chaila Chaila, Naa Pere Kanchanmala and Ye Jilla still finding their way onto playlists today.

What sets them apart is a rare blend: catchy, conversational lyrics that somehow manage to slip in a life lesson or two along the way. The title track, in particular, captures the larger-than-life energy of Chiranjeevi’s character and remains an instant time machine back to the 2000s for many listeners. Adding to its charm, Chiranjeevi himself lent his voice to both Chaila Chaila and the title track.

Catch the film in theatres!

Shankar Dada MBBS was adapted from Rajkumar Hirani’s Munna Bhai MBBS, which released in Hindi in 2003. While the success of a remake heavily depends on how well audiences can relate to the characters and how well the story adapts to their tastes, this film went on to become a major commercial success. It earned Chiranjeevi the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in Telugu, while Srikanth won for Best Supporting Actor.

So, without further ado, book your tickets and enjoy this wacky entertainer on the big screen once again!
