Monsoon Health

The monsoon does not only bring a welcome relief from the scorching summer sun, it also makes the climate conducive for a host of diseases along. Infections and stomach upsets are rampant in the monsoons, but a few safeguards can make all the difference.

1-This monsoon drink only filtered and boiled water, within 24 hours of boiling.

2-Thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables before consuming, especially leafy vegetables. Soaking the leafy veggies in salt water for about 10 minutes and then rinsing thoroughly in running water can help remove impurities, larvae, dust and worms.

3-Cook your food thoroughly. And consume them fresh and hot. Cool or lukewarm food is ideal for the growth of bacteria. Be wary of chutneys and sauces since they are stored at room temperature and are loaded with harmful microorganisms.

4-Moderation is the key, during all seasons especially during monsoons as the body finds it harder to digest food quickly. In order to enhance your digestion, consume foods like garlic, pepper, ginger, turmeric and coriander.

5-Instead of spicy hot deep fried bajjiyas, try freshly cooked or freshly cut fruits and vegetables.

6-Though hot and deep fried in oil, avoid food from stalls as the chutneys, accompaniments and chopped onions sprinkled on top are possible hosts for infections and stomach upsets.

7-Avoid stale or leftover food.

8-Clean and thoroughly wash your chopping board before using them. Wash your hands before handling food, after eating food, after visiting the toilet. Maintain good personal hygiene.

Eat healthy to be hearty this monsoon!
