Famous Kuchipudi dancer Sobha Naidu talks about classical dance & more

Kuchipudi exemplar and Anakapalle-born Padmasree Sobha Naidu, who was recently in town for a dance performance, shares about her love for the city and its people with Jaya Siva Murty.

How has performing in the city been?

“Vizag is culturally very aware and our Kuchipudi performances here have always met a packed audience. In fact, the fourteen ballets that I composed and produced, have all been presented to the city. I’d call it the best place in Andhra Pradesh for art lovers. The many performances that we have done here at Kalabharati and other venues have been well received.”

Do you feel that classical dances are on the decline, with the youth more attracted to western dances?

“There are ups and downs in classical dance, and some performances are not good at all. However, I have belief and faith in the classical dances, and I know that the phase of lack of appreciation is just a temporary one.”

Can you share some experience from your recent trip?

“Every programme has hurdles. In fact, during this trip to Vizag, the airline refused some of our luggage and a couple of team members had to come halfway by road, to make it to the show in the nick of time. But, after you cross each hurdle and perform, and get appreciated, that is well worth the effort.

Which role do you love more? Performing onstage or teaching at your academy in Hyderabad?

“In the past, I loved performing but now teaching gives me the same satisfaction. In fact, along with teaching students, I teach myself as well. I find equal happiness as a choreographer and when my students are applauded onstage.”

What change would you like to see in the future of classical dances?

“I feel that Kuchipudi, though appreciated, still does not get sponsorships, as many other disciplines do. I hope to see that change in the future.”
