After a long period of anticipation, reports now indicate that Google is planning to invest approximately Rs 50,000 crore ($6 billion) to build a 1-gigawatt data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, according to a Reuters report citing government officials. If realised, the facility would be Google’s largest data centre in Asia and first in India, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital infrastructure journey.
The Google data centre Visakhapatnam project is expected to be part of a 500-acre “Data City” in the Madhurawada region of Visakhapatnam, with Google reportedly securing around 80 acres of land. The Andhra Pradesh government has stated its goal to develop 6 GW of data centre capacity in the state over the next five years, with 1.6 GW already committed.
The investment plans follow a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Google and the Andhra Pradesh government in December 2024 to explore collaboration on AI, digital infrastructure, and skill development. The MoU was confirmed by state officials and announced on Google’s official social media channels.
As of now, Google has not yet released an official public statement confirming the Rs 50,000 crore investment, but the plans mark a strong step forward for tech growth in the region.
The Google data centre in Visakhapatnam is expected to enhance cloud computing capabilities and expand digital infrastructure across India, while also creating opportunities for employment and regional economic growth. Further updates, including timelines and project details, are awaited.
