GMR lands in Goa!

GMR Airports has been selected to create and operate the new Rs. 30 billion Mopa Airport in Goa, This was the result of a competitive bidding process. It won the bid ahead of Airports Authority of India and a consortium involving South Korean’s Incheon airport group.

The Group’s founder – Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao – is an alumni of our very own Andhra University. The Group is already running the airports in Delhi and Hyderabad. They also have worked on airport projects in Turkey and the Philippines, GMR Airports will have a 40-year concession for the new Goa airport, with a possible 20-year extension.

The new airport will help increase Goa’s air capacity as compared to the existing Dabolim Airport which handles up to 4.9 million passengers per year. It will be built in four phases, with capacity gradually increasing from 4.4 million passengers per year in the first phase to more than 13 million passengers by the end of the fourth phase.

Though this is a national achievement, somewhere it also rings a bell in Vizag’s heart!
