Cyclone ‘Fani’ effect in Vizag: The district likely to remain largely unaffected

Cyclone ‘Fani’ is likely to turn into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm in the next 24 hours. Parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are likely to receive heavy rains, gusty winds, and thunderstorms. However, Cyclone ‘Fani’ might not cause much change in Vizag, as informed by an official from the Control Room at the Collectorate.

Speaking to Yo! Vizag, an official said, “Cyclone ‘Fani’ is likely to have no effect on Visakhapatnam district as of now. However, as a precautionary measure, those who venture into the sea have been shifted to safer areas and have been advised against going into the sea. Also, there wouldn’t be any rains in the district and temperatures are expected to be on the higher side in the coming three days. The cyclone is most likely to cross the shore near Machilipatnam.”

Meanwhile, as reported earlier, the authorities in Vizag have stepped up the vigil given the reports that the Cyclone is likely to intensify in the coming hours. The Control Room, at the Collectorate, will reportedly be working round the clock and can be contacted via a toll-free number 1800 4250 0002.

“The Cyclonic Storm ‘Fani’ over southeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood moved further northwards with a speed of about 11 kmph in last 06 hours and lay centered at 1130 hrs IST of 29th April 2019 near Lat. 9.2°N and Long. 86.9°E over southeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood, about 620 km east-northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 840 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and 990 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh). It is very likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 06 hours and into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards till 01st May and thereafter re-curve north-northeastwards towards Odisha Coast,” an IMD bulletin, released at 5.00 pm on Monday, read.
