The Australian cricket team had a major scare in Guwahati on Tuesday night. The players and staff were returning to their hotel from the Barsapara stadium, when a rock, roughly in the size of a cricket ball, was hurled at the bus. Cricket Australia website said that the stone pierced a window on the right side of the bus and ended up landing inside. Fortunately, no one sat next to the window that was broken. No player was injured during the incident, but they were understandably shaken up.
The incident was brought to the public’s notice by the Australian batsman Aaron Finch through his Twitter account.
In fact, a few weeks earlier, the Australian team’s bus was attacked even in Bangladesh when a small rock was thrown at it. The bus had suffered only a minor damage then, and no one was injured.
The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, condemned the incident and said that the guilty will be put behind the bars. MLA Himanta Biswa Sarma also apologized to the Australian team via his Twitter account.
A few years ago, the spectators threw water bottles into the ground at the Barabati stadium in Cuttack during a T20 match between India and South Africa. Tuesday’s game was the first international cricket match played at the new Barsapara, and this incident seems to have put a scar on it. Such incidents seem to mar the image of Indian cricket fans among the sporting fraternity and the officials need to take stringent actions to prevent them.
The Indians will take on the Aussies in the third and final T20 match in Hyderabad on Friday.
