The Indian Coast Guard interacted with the local fishermen on Wednesday. They are a nodal agency that undertakes coordinated search and rescue efforts in India. One of their mandated duties is to provide protection to fishermen and assist them at sea in times of distress.
The 61 day fishing ban over East Coast was lifted on Wednesday night. After the same, the Indian Coast Guard held a one-on-one interaction at the fishing villages for the benefit of the fishermen residing there.
Information was disseminated about the safety of fishermen at sea and instructions given on how to utilise the distress alert transmitter in case of emergency. AK Harbila, The Commander, Coast Guard Headquarters (Andhra Pradesh), Visakhapatnam Deputy Inspector General, stated that the Indian Coast Guard units located in the state have achieved a milestone.
They have conducted 110 such community interactions all through the period of the fishing ban. They teamed up with the Indian Navy, Marine Police and state Fisheries authorities for the same.
Last year, the Indian Coast Guard had conducted 100 such interactions of the same nature. The agency will also be conducting a yoga camp for fishermen on June 21 and create awareness on drug abuse and trafficking.
