Indian Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (amendment) Bill, 2026 on April 2, according statutory recognition to Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh. The bill was passed in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
The process in Parliament followed a resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on March 28.
The passage of the bill ended legal and political uncertainty over the capital issue.
It was Chandrababu Naidu who had announced Amaravati as the capital of AP in 2015 after the bifurcation of the State. However, the YSRCP, which came to power in 2019, made the three capital proposal and was unsuccessful in getting it realised.
Hailing the passage of the bill in both Houses, the cadres of TDP and Jana Sena celebrated the occasion.
At the TDP office in Visakhapatnam, party leaders cut a cake marking the celebration. Chanting ‘Jai Amaravati’ slogans, party workers fired crackers and distributed sweets.
