The National Highway in the limits of Visakhapatnam is turning out to be a dangerous accident zone. Around 66 black spots have been identified within 73 km of National Highway.
If more than 3 accidents take place at a location on the road in a stretch of 500 m, the location is considered to be a black spot. By identifying such accident zones, the Police Department, GVMC, and Panchayati Raj officials take the necessary steps to prevent accidents at the blackouts.
At some of the blackspots mainly near the junctions, there are no signals for restricting the walkers to cross the road. The markings indicating the pedestrian zone on the highway are missing at some black spots. Some locations have improper street lights while some places lack in danger boards.
The increase in vehicular population in Visakhapatnam has also become a reason as the traffic in the city has been increasing at an alarming rate.
