Navy and VUDA give Submarine Museum a much needed overhaul.

Navy and VUDA have joined hands to give a much needed overhaul to the mighty INS Kursura. The location of the submarine museum renders it exposed to the elements. The moisture laden, saline sea air is known to rust metals very easily. This is the primary reason the hull of the submarine has been damaged to a large extent. Vizag Urban Development Authority and Indian Navy will work together to restore the museum.

The damage: Sea air and the moisture have wrecked havoc on the outer metal plates of the hull. Corrosion has set in and if not fixed in time, will deteriorate further. Naval authorities are making provisions for steel plates for the overhaul. Tenders have been called in and the work started last year will complete soon.

A fibre covering of 1 to 1.5 mm will be provide over the outer hull to keep out moisture. The work is to be completed in time with inaugural of the Tu-142 aircraft museum and World Submarine Day on December 8. With the aircraft museum beside it, The mighty submarine will gather more tourists. Te pride of beach road, the Indian Navy submarine is a dressing ship, a rare honour. Commanding a good view and portion of the beach road, the submarine is one of the major tourist attractions of Vizag.

A huge expenditure for the works underway will be incurred. Due to this, the works are being conducted in a phased manner and are set to pick up pace. Together, the new aircraft and the submarine will be a attractive spot and a testimony to India’s naval might.
