More than 100 bikes and scooters have been taken into custody by the Vizag city police officials on Saturday for breaking the safety norms. An equal number of drivers have been charged for careless driving and racing.
The police team has conducted a surge along the stretch between Naval Coast Battery and Bheemili in Vizag to confine the ones who are participating in speed racing, drag racing, motorbike stunts and over speeding.
All the bikers belong to 16 to 30 years age group. Most of them being school or college dropouts, two of the caught bikers had criminal charges earlier. An intermediate dropout has a criminal murder case pending on him.
“We did not took them for speeding or racing only. Many have altered the company made silencers and put up designer number plates in voilation of the prescribed norms. Many drivers were caught driving without licences, (sic)” DCP (Law and Order), K. Fakkeerappa, quoted as saying.
Fakkeerappa said, “During the drive, many minor were found driving vehicles. We are verifying their age and other details. We’ll let them go after a counselling session with their parents. We will levy fines too.”
Also, the DGP mentioned that they are working on a citizen-based app called Eagle Eye to help people report about the traffic violations happening in and around the city. The app is under test run supervised by Traffic Department and the citizens would be receiving it shortly.
