A recent study by the Sociology professors from Andhra University revealed that the usage of drugs in Vizag has been increasing every year.
It was learned that in the early stage the consumers start by taking drugs during occasions. As time passes, they start consuming once or twice in a week and end up having them twice or thrice in a day. Not just ganja (marijuana) or cocaine, various injections, syrups, and tablets are also being used. Also, the drugs are not being spared by children.
Marijuana is being imported to the city from places outside like West Bengal, Coimbatore, Maharashtra, Pondicherry, to name a few. It also comes from places like Araku, Chintapalli, and Seleru.
In Vizag, the consumers are having marijuana at beach locations, parks, graveyards, railway wagon sheds, sports grounds, public toilets and deserted places. Code words like virgin, joint, weed and dope are being used to buy marijuana. The educated people do not hesitate to buy marijuana from local pan shops.
The research by Andhra University also revealed that students from renowned colleges are helping in supplying weed directly into the premises. Even girls have been getting addicted to the marijuana supplied by their close ones, the study revealed.
The study has mentioned that lecturers should identify students who are addicted to drugs. They should keep an eye on students who do not attend classes regularly and counsel them regarding the harmful effects of drugs. Also, proper education about drugs has to be taught to the students to prevent spoiling of lives.
