Visakhapatnam records its first swine flu death

As the demons of swine flu begin to spread their tentacles across the district, a 28-year-old woman succumbed to the disease in Visakhapatnam. The woman, who hailed from Vizianagaram district, was admitted to a chest hospital in Visakhapatnam after she was diagnosed with swine flu.

Reportedly, the woman visited Visakhapatnam’s King George Hospital (KGH) on Saturday after she showed symptoms of flu. After the tests confirmed that she was affected by swine flu, she was admitted to a chest hospital for the treatment.

In another case, a 50-year-old man from Visakhapatnam was also diagnosed with swine flu, taking the total number of cases in Andhra Pradesh to nine, as of Monday.

In a step to keep a check on the spread of swine flu in Visakhapatnam, the authorities have recently decided to set up three screening centres in the city. These centres, which would be coming up at Visakhapatnam airport, Railway station and RTC Complex, will be used to screen the individuals coming from other cities.

The decision was taken at a review meeting that was held at the Visakhapatnam Collectorate on Monday. District Collector Pravin Kumar discussed in detail with the superintends of various government and private hospitals in the city to curb the spread of swine flu at the entry level.

Reportedly, it was identified that the flu was being carried by those entering the city from metro cities. Keeping the same in view, Mr Kumar directed the officials to supply Tamiflu tablets free of cost to anyone who’s diagnosed with the disease.

Here are a few symptoms of swine flu. Please consult a doctor if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Chills

  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
