New flyovers to be built in Visakhapatnam?

With the number of vehicles in Visakhapatnam on the rise, the lanes appear to be getting busier and cramped for room ever than before. It is estimated that more than 5000 new vehicles are hitting Visakhapatnam’s roads every month, thereby making it increasingly difficult to facilitate a smoother flow of traffic. While two new flyovers, one each at NAD junction and convent junction, are expected to make the situation better, it has been reported that the officials have identified six other prime junctions in the city to control the traffic.

Hanumanthawaka, Maddilapalem, Satyam Junction, Sheelanagar, Gajuwaka, and Kurmannapalem are the main centres through which the national highway in the city passes. Reportedly, new flyovers are mooted at these junctions to ease the traffic.

It has been learned that the Vizag Development Centre (VDC) met BJP senior leader K Haribabu to request Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for sanctioning of Rs 1,000 crore to better the state of traffic in Visakhapatnam.

We explained the immediate need to improve the traffic conditions in the city for which, the city needs Rs 1,000 crore to construct six flyovers, FoBs and pathways. Every year, 72,000 vehicles coming on to the roads and three lakh vehicles added only in the past four years,” O Naresh Kumar, Chairman VDC, was quoted as saying.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, Nitin Gadkari, will be laying the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 6,000 crore in Vizag. The Union Minister will be staying in the city upto June 13.
