AP Government sanctions GVMC’s bio mining project in Visakhapatnam

GVMC’s bio-mining project, which was proposed in 2016, for re-mediating the solid waste dump yard at Kapuluppada in Visakhapatnam, has finally been sanctioned by the State Government. Reportedly, about 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of unsegregated waste have been accumulated in the dump yard since 2001.

It may be noted that GVMC

earlier sought the involvement of private companies under corporate social responsibility. Accordingly, Coromandel Fertilizers, a private agency, is now going to carry out the landfill reclamation project. It needs to scientifically process and dispose of the garbage. As reported by Times of India, this project will cost GVMC around Rs.21.05 crores and the price has been fixed at Rs.842 per metric tonne.

Bio-mining

Bio-mining is the process of levelling the waste and removing the recyclable material from it. While the useful material for the compost will be separated, the waste will be removed. The remaining waste will be sent to the landfill.

A bio-remediation project was earlier launched by the GVMC on five acres of land at the Kapuluppada dump yard in Visakhapatnam.

It is known that the city generates around 1100 tonnes of the waste, of which 7% will be is known to be plastic waste. GVMC promised to supply around 950 tonnes of waste every day to the waste-to-energy plant to reduce the burden on the dumping yard.
