Visakhapatnam’s urban civic body GVMC is all set to build more public toilets in the areas where tourist footfalls are more.
The move will also help strengthen the city’s ODF (Open Defecation Free) status which bolstered its position in last year’s Swachh Survekshan’s rankings.
As per The Hindu, Municipal Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan said that 80 to 90 more public toilets are likely to be constructed in areas where more number of people are likely to visit. The Commissioner also said that it is imperative to construct clean and neat toilets to maintain Visakhapatnam’s ODF status.
It has been learned that container toilets will be placed in spots where there is a requirement but have certain space constraints.
With the implementation of the Swachh Bharat mission over the last two years, the number of public toilets in the city has gone up from 256 to 334, as per a source of The Hindu.
In order to bag a better spot on the Swachh Survekshan list this year, the GVMC officials have brought newer steps into action. Asking the public to maintain two separate dustbins for dry and wet wastes and trying to limit the use of polythene bags are a few praiseworthy steps to be mentioned.
