Social Media Campaign For Circulating Small Currency

One must have come across posts circulating on social media urging people to help street vendors, local businessmen and small businesses by circulating small currency so they don’t suffer the effects of demonetisation.

WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter have been abuzz with messages, asking people to not just help out but to spread the message too. The campaign started after it was noticed that people were making small purchases and demanding change from local shops in return for the new Rs 2000 note.

The message urges people to buy essential items like fruits and vegetables from small vendors instead of malls or supermarkets, as these small businesses depend on the money they make per day for both their daily sustenance and reinvestment. Due to the demonetisation and shortage of viable currency, daily wage workers are facing inconvenience.

Reportedly, people selling at Rythu Bazaar, Fishing Harbour, MVP colony, Railway New Colony, Gajuwaka and Ukkunagaram are facing hardships. The AP Chambers of Commerce and Industry State President-elect G Sambasiva Rao stated that there is no need to hide small currency and coins at home, they should be circulated in the market to keep the small businesses afloat.

The high value notes can be used while making transactions at malls and supermarkets, or rather even prefer to pay their bill digitally. Fisherman activist and advocate Ganta Papa Rao stated that it was irresponsible of Vizagites to trouble small business during this time, and to instead some prepared with small currency to make the purchases.
