In an unfortunate road accident, seven pilgrims, all women were killed while at least six others were injured in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The incident took place when the auto rickshaw in which they were travelling collided head-on with a speeding truck during the early hours of Saturday.
The police have informed that the overcrowded auto rickshaw consisted of a total of 13 women from Allavaram village who were travelling to the famous temple of Lord Venkateswara Swamy at Vadapalli.
It has been learned that some of the passengers were thrown out of the vehicle while some got crushed under the tyres of the truck that rammed into the auto rickshaw.
Six of the passengers died on the spot, one breathed her last while being shifted to Kakinada government hospital. The deceased were identified as Ch Nagamani, P Bhavani, P Parvathi, D Ananta Lakshmi, P Lakshmi, P Durga and Jagadeeshwari.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief at the incident and ordered the officials to submit a detailed report of the accident. Deputy Chief Minister N.Chinarajappa rushed to the spot to inquire about the health of the injured.
The incident which occurred at Modekurru village is being investigated to bring other facts to light.
